So you've just purchased your shiny new iPhone, you've probably already downloaded more app's than your ever going to use. As well as visiting multiple sites looking for the latest accessories to work with your new social status symbol. Not that anything is wrong with doing this. Its exciting getting a new toy to play with, especially if you haven't used an iPhone before.

However, finding a device which is actually useful and combines well with the iPhone (which isn't a gimmick) is fairly rare. But one of the most useful inventions for the iPhone, is the iPhone car kit. There are numerous kits which offer iPhone integration into your vehicle. Each has different strengths and weaknesses, however the general principle is the same. You receive iPod and or Phone through your vehicle stereo. Sounds good right!! Well it is.

So what would you expect an iPhone car kit?

Bluetooth Integration is becoming big business for many manufacturers, Partly due to government regulations introduced in the early 2000's and secondly due to the increasing emphasis on safety. The recent surge in bluetooth car kit sales has allowed manufacturers to develop new systems designed to make these systems much more use-able and integrate into the vehicles stereo & entertainment systems too provide greater control.

Previously, integrated Bluetooth car kits consisted of a stereo mute function that auto-mutes any sound being played through the stereo at the time of a call. These kits don't actually integrate into the stereo system they just override it when a call is made or received. New systems being introduced into the market from Dension allows complete integration into the stereo system. So you can control your phone through the steering wheel controls to browse phonebook & recent calls, and also make and answer calls. Information is displayed on the cluster screen (near the rev gauge & speed gauge) or on the stereo in some occasions.

The New Kits show how far the technology is developed in recent years as it was previously thought too difficult to create a system that integrates as all vehicles software and hardware are different. Creating a dilemma, either produce one product which is universal, and installs via a unique vehicle specific lead (SOT Leads) or create multiple product SKU's (Stock keeping Units) of the same kit for compatibility into each different vehicle manufacturer, and sometimes models.

You either love them or hate them, or your not too bothered either way. However there is a myth about iPod fm transmitters that isn't always the case. The reports of poor quality and constant feedback & interference are not always 100% accurate.

If you are comparing them to a fully integrated ipod car system like the Dension gateway 100 CAN then yes FM Transmitters are of a poorer quality and have less features and functionality. However you have to bare in mind the price difference of each product. Your comparing £30-40 with £130-£140. or another way of looking at it, a cheaper MP3 player with an iPod. There are obvious differences but this should be expected.

The problem with Transmitters is inherent of all transmitters to a certain extent, this is due to how they actually work. Transmission of radio frequencies beans the signal being broadcast from one device to another. In this case the ipod fm transmitter to the radio. The problem occurs when the frequency bands are close to other stronger signals. When this happens you get a bleed of one into the other, resulting in interference and / or distortion.

Having said this there are a few ways round the problem but it takes a little experimenting. Firstly try using a frequency which is the furthest away from any strong signal in your area. Secondly select a back up station as far away from the first signal band and pre set to the stereo as well. So if you start to receive interference you can quickly change without much inconvenience.

A lot of vehicles are now being produced with iPod car kits pre-installed, or the option to buy one from the dealership as part of a package deal. The problem is there are many different variations of an iPod car kit. So what is the better option. Factory standard or After-market?

I one heard a customer say they were sold an iPod kit when they purchased a new car from a dealership. It was suggested to him that it was the best option available for his car & nothing else was comparable. To be fair he was fairly happy with it. It did what he wanted it to do. However the customer was looking around & decided to check to see if anything else was available, just out of interest. He came along to iPod Car Kit Direct and displayed his kit, He was shocked when we told him his iPod kit was a simple AUX input. Not that there's anything wrong with a AUX input, Its like listening through the headphones. However we told him we sold them for £5 he was annoyed.

However what I can do is tell you about what types of product do what and what you should expect from them.

There are three or four types of product to connect your iPod / iPhone into your car.

Firstly an AUX in, this is a 3.5mm plug into your vehicle. This will not be compatible with all vehicles as a physical AUX input is required into the stereo its self. (Usually available on after-market stereos but not usually on factory standard) The benefit of the AUX in is that its cheap, costing around £5 for the lead. This solution will basically allow you to listen to your music as you would through the headphones, You cant control your iPod just listen.

Secondly you get FM Transmitters, these connect to your stereo wirelessly through a preselected FM frequency. The benefits are that every stereo is compatible so it doesn't matter what car you drive. However if you live in built up area's you may struggle to receive a good signal as other frequencies may be picked up at the same time.

Thirdly you can get FM Modulators, They work on a similar principle to the transmitters with one exception. They are physically hard wired into the stereo. So you receive a much better signal & you can charge you iPod. However all music selections must be made from the iPod. Again these kits are universal but you may need an aerial adapter dependant on the type of aerial in your vehicle. Some Volvo's use antennas inside the windows so these aren't compatible.

Fourthly are the integrated kits, These are vehicle specific. The connect into your stereo and allow you to control the iPod / iPhone through the stereo or steering wheel controls. They also offer iPod charge and most offer text display on the cluster screen or stereo, however this depends on the electronic system used in the vehicle. Most new vehicles use CAN bus or MOST if this is the case you should receive text in the car. Needles to say the Integrated kits offer the best iPod functionality by far.

So which is best Factory or After-market equipment, there are so many different kits out that offer different features its too difficult to say. However it is worth saying where the after-market leads the factory spec follows. So make sure you get all the facts from the dealership compare to other products available on the market and make your mind up from there.

There are a lot more than 10 reasons why not to use a mobile phone when driving, however i'll keep it short and snappy. After all i'm sure you will all agree with most of what i'm about to say, and if you only take just one point away with you. Think about it, think about why your thinking about it. Then do something about it.

Reason number One: Points on your licence.

Quite a shallow reason to start with but a valid one non the less. Nobody wants points because it ultimately results in a ban. You get points because its considered dangerous driving. Think About it.

Reason number Two: Penalty Fine.

Again a fairly shallow reason, however who enjoys getting a fine? I don't know anybody. The fine can be especially difficult to swallow as many handsfree kits cost half the amount of the fine given. It doesn't take a genius to realise what people should be doing.

Reason number Three: Suspended Licence.

You don't have to do it all the time, Its only takes one second for it to happen. If a police officer spots you it and you already have points could mean the end of your driving licence for 12 months. What does that mean for you? No transport, social life or job? Think, is it worth it?

Reason number Four: Reduced awareness.

If you text when driving its the equivalent of being three times over the alcohol limit. We don't tolerate drink drivers so why texters?

Reason number Five: Reduced ability.

Its strange that most of us don't think about what were doing when we drive & how dangerous it actually is. I mean, we drive a 3 tonne lump of metal around at 70mph and higher relatively close to somebody in front and behind, and people coming in the opposite direction. Do you really need an excuse to not drive responsibly? Just think of your family before the inevitable happens.

Reason number Nine: Somebody else's family.

If your serial texter who doesn't use a bluetooth car kit when doing so. Think the next time you do it, it might be your last. Or the family driving towards you. Could you live with that on your conscience? I doubt it.

Reason number Ten: Time.

I seriously doubt that a text or call is so important that you have to answer it immediately. I mean, what is that important? With the possible exception of your wife going into labour i'm fresh out of ideas. You have all the time in the world to call or text back later.

Does Parrots Dominance result in better quality?

When you think of bluetooth car kits you automatically think of parrot bluetooth. Parrot have a dominance over the market in terms of brand recognition and selling power, however does this mean they produce the better products?

There is a lot of competition in the bluetooth market, with the majority of manufacturers producing very similar kits, in both style and design. Its an important element when designing products. After all it does have to sit & integrate into your vehicle. However the one thing you cant replicate is the functionality and usability. Each brand operates slightly differently from others and has different compatibility with phone sets and how you can interact with them when paired.

Parrot are no different from other manufacturers when it come to this. They have some good points and some bad ones too. However on the whole parrot offer a good package, as you would expect from a market leader. This doesn't they lead the field in each area of bluetooth and phone integration. Infact you could probably choose a hand full of products and pick a feature which performs better that the parrot counterpart. For example when it comes to music the parrot offers iPod integration. Although its only through the front two speakers of the vehicle in most cases. The Bury Music kits offer the same iPod integration however you can control & navigate choices by voice commands (which stops when you get to the music) however this is especially useful when your driving. So you can concentrate fully on the road and not the iPod / iPhone.

Other brands like the Novero range of products also offer full music streaming via A2DP bluetooth protocol. Something that parrot does not support fully. However its the handsfree element that is ultimately the most important feature, and something in which neither of the three manufacturers mentioned previously fail. Each has different quirks and slightly different way of navigation and phone book browsing which ultimately results in the same thing. If you choose Bury, Parrot Or Novero you should be happy with your choice. After all your making the roads a safer place.

How to install a bluetooth kit. Do things the easy way.

There are two ways bluetooth car kits can be installed, one is the difficult way, the other is easier (however can still be fairly difficult dependant on vehicle). The problem is, Bluetooth kits are made with ISO connections as standard. ISO is an older industry standard which determins the locations of various wires (which perform different functions) For example, the front left and right speakers, back left and right, power, mute and ignition. If your vehicle is ISO, then the kits will install fairly easily.

The problem is, the ISO standard is now fairly old. More modern vehicles utilise systems such as CAN bus & fibre Optic MOST systems which do not use conventional wires. If this is the case you will either need to splice into the wires (where possible) or use a mute cable, ISO2CAR, Drive&Mute or Audio2Car. They all perform the same task, however each has a slightly different compatibility. For example Audio2Car work particularly well with amplified systems.

The only other difficult task when installing the bluetooth kit is to route the microphone into position. This routes from the back of the bluetooth unit. Usually installed behind the car stereo. From here its usually best to route the opposite direction from the driver. Remove the glovebox where ever possible (Different for each vehicle, but usually fairly pain free when the screws are found).

Remove the fascia from the A pillar in the vehicle, they usually un-clip, however sometimes they are screwed in, if so you should be able to pull out the airbag clip plate (a little plastic clip showing where the air bag is) a screw is usually found beneath this. There may be a couple more hidden screws to remove before the fascia can be removed. A little pull on the rear-view mirror fascia should allow you to install and route wire through the lining of the roof. (Dont pull too hard as you may pull the mirror off, and they can be a pain to reinstall) a metal coat hanger will do nicely when pushing it through. From here wire down the A pillar, avoid the air bags at all costs and do not tangle the wire around them. And route behind the glove box to the bluetooth unit.

After this do done double check you have the Power, Ground (when required) & Ignition wires are active. The Ignition is a must to check, the kits will not work with out it. In fact thid is the number one cause for people thinking they have a faulty unit. If your harness doesn't have an ignition (not all do) the best point is either the fusebox, or the Cigarette lighter wire. A simple way of testing is by turning the ignition on when the wires are connected. The unit should power up.

Assuming the kit is working tidy up behind the stereo and re connect the dashboard & fascias and position the microphone to exactly where you want it near the mirror (make sure is doesn't obstruct it). Pair your phone using the manufacturers instructions and you will have a fully working Bluetooth car kit at your disposal. (If you choose well, you'll wonder how you ever lived with out one).

All in all the job shouldn't take longer than an hour of your time, unless you have a particulatly difficult vehicle such as a BMW X5 (Due to the location of the unit) or most Porsche's (Because of the firewall).

Bluetooth Car Kits are known to improve driver safety when using the mobile phone, if you dont have one installed in your vehicle. Don't use your phone.

We all have driving experience and can multi-task right? Wrong. Its a combination of factors that make it dangerous including reducing the physical contact with the car operating controls.

There are more cars on the road now than ever before. Combine this with new technology & the need to be in contact with everybody every minute of the day, and it could spell disaster for 1000's of road users daily.

Some new statistics state that more than 50% of road users in the UK have illegally used their mobile phone when driving more than once in the last week, and a figure around 85% have used their phones while driving in there life time.

To decide whether handsfree kits offer improved safety, we first have to discuss how using a mobile phone is dangerous. There is no doubt amongst the experts that it is. Using a mobile phone is dangerous for two reasons.

Firstly when talking on your phone whilst driving you have to break contact with the wheel & car controls to do so, and by breaking contact from the vehicle you also reduce your reaction time by up to 4x.

Secondly concentration is lost when talking to other people, less attention is paid to the road and more on the conversation taking place. This is a natural occurrence & no matter how much we feel we can over compensate for doing so we cant, again this reduces reaction time. Combining both together when driving can result at the very least dangerous driving.

We now come to the title question, Do bluetooth handsfree kits improve driver safety? Well there are arguments for both sides of the debate. The opposition mainly concentrating on the second point made earlier, that concentration is lost when making a phone call & to be honest the use of a handsfree car kit doesn't really improve this. However do we only hold conversations over the phone or do we also have them with the passengers we carry? I don't know anybody who carries passengers and doesn't talk to them at some point during the commute. Who defines whether this is more or less acceptable than doing so over the phone?

The problem is there are so many distractions when we drive already which are equal to talking over the phone, and not necessarily from inside the car. These distractions occur every minute where driving & its up to us whether or not to take notice (most of the time we don't). However this is where the counter argument comes from.

Distractions are a common occurrence, and talking on the phone is no more of a distraction than say reading an advertising board, playing the number plate game or even singing along with the radio. The point is, if we outlaw the use of phone kits where do we stop, do we make it illegal to do anything other than drive. Were not allowed to take our eyes of the road & our hands from the steering wheel, no talking, listening to music or anything other than driving? Would this be more dangerous due to boredom?

Phone Kits are considered to improve safety due to the fact you no longer have to hold the phone to have a conversation. Your hands remain on the steering wheel & eyes on the road. In fact the process is the same as talking to somebody next to you. Using phone kits aren't illegal, however if a police officer thinks you are driving dangerously due to using a phone kit or changing the stereo or CD or even talking to a passenger you can be prosecuted. It is the drivers responsibility to gauge whether they are capable or doing so safely.

One thing is for sure, using a bluetooth car kit does improve ease of making or receiving a call & allows the driver to concentrate on driving properly. Its certainly a better option than not using one.

Technology is continually improving, The design of the iPhone 4 is a perfect example of this. Although it has a few teething problems the improvements in terms of hardware is much greater that the previous iPhone 3GS. It was only a matter of time before manufacturers of iPod car kits & Fm Transmitters developed better ways of offering more from their products.

A prime example of the improvements being made to iPod FM Transmitters is the effort Griffin made creating an Apple App for the sole use with their products. Multiple Griffin products support the new App which allows the frequencies to be changed from the iPhone & iPod Touch. This doesn't sound too great! However the App means you can took away the connection to the FM transmitter only leaving the iPod wire exposed. Frequencies can be changed at the touch of a button rather than going through the device its self. A much safer way of changing if your driving alone.

Although there are no major hardware improvements that will alter or improve the performance of Griffin products. The software upgrades indicate the products are continually improving and moving with the times, making usability & functionality much easier for all users.

Griffin generally lead the field when it comes to Fm Transmitter integration into vehicles. So at some point in the future multiple apps will more than likely be available for other devices as well. This can only lead to improvement in all products ranges & and continue to drive the technology to new and improved levels of iPhone integration.

Problems with Legitimate Parrot products in the UK.

Its a well know problem that parrot have major supply issues of parrot bluetooth goods in the UK, The genuine stock is readily available and ready to distribute through the correct channels. However this side of the business is not the problem. The problem is there is so much grey stock in the UK at the minute it is very difficult to recognise genuine items from the Grey stock which is generally priced extremely low online.

So why does this matter?

Well if you purchase Grey stock the UK warranty is void & you don't have technical support from parrot. This is obviously a big issue if you run into any problems with the installation or further down the line with the product. Maybe this is not a big issue for some of those willing to take the risk. But consider this, over 50% of the Grey stock is being purchased from channels with Europe who deal with faulty and returned products then import to the UK when fixed, and a considerable amount is imported from china when its debatable whether its genuine parrot stock at all. The other you could be getting a second hand product which has been re-flashed with software. You could get the grey stock up to £30 cheaper than the genuine product online however without warranties.

Parrot are aware of the problem of illegal importation of their products and have launched an new initiative to reduce the fraudulent products entering the UK market place. This consists of a unique serial number containing the number “55” added to the exterior packaging on the box. From now, If your parrot product does not have 55 in the serial number I would be worried about the quality and return to the retailer as soon as possible.

If you want a bluetooth car kit most people automatically think of the brand Parrot, it has the brand awareness that most companies would die for. Almost on the same level as google. You've heard of the phrase “Google it” haven't you. Well most people contact us think parrot is bluetooth, and are unaware that other brands are available. Even though there is a competitive market for bluetooth car kits. Brands such as bury, motorola, nokia and many others are readily available most people only relate to parrot.

For all there dominance, do parrot produce the best bluetooth products especially over competitor brands that offer a very similar version?

From our experience parrot do offer very competitive kits, each kit providing something different to the other variations of parrot kits. For example the new parrot range the MKI, has three versions. The MKI9000, MKI9100 and the MKI9200. Each offers the same bluetooth and additional functions such as iPod. However each of the upgrades offer a better screen, which allows for better integration of bluetooth phone book, ipod music library and other functions. However there are other extremely good kits that offer the same level of integration and functions.

The Bury cc9060 provides excellent voice recognition software which in our opinion is second too none. Simply select voice on the screen and speak the commands you want it to perform. Its such a simple feature that really improves the functionality of the kit and adds additional safety features and value for money.

Parrot MKI range do also have this feature, although we find it a little more difficult to use.

The parrot does have some negatives, firstly the systems are difficult to use unless you purchase one with the screen & there is a lot of grey stock sold online without UK warranties. Be sure to check the parrot is genuine before hand and return it immediately if you purchase one that isn't.

We find the Parrot brand best for several reasons including style & integration, functions & features and easy of installation. The ease of use is on par with other products but generally speaking you will be happy if you purchase parrot bluetooth

Does Fusion Car Audio offer Good Value for Money ?

The Fusion Car Audio brand in the UK is strong, A Good combination of advertising and product quality has established Fusion as one of the more significant brands amongst a large competitor base. Fusion products are immediately recognisable, probably more so than any other brand on the market which helps with the popularity and sale of Fusion products.

To ask a question Is fusion good value for money? First we have to consider other products available, what quality they are and where fusion sits against the competition. Secondly if the value for money is good, does this make them any more desirable?

To start with quality, Fusion isn't leading the market. The Fusion products offer a decent quality overall, however most of the products fall into the entry level category. Basically meaning the audio equipment is at good standard but can't and wont compete against other products designed for competition (Digital Designs, RE Audio, Focal, Diamond etc) However this generally wont effect people looking to purchase Fusion (or any equivalent products) as they aren't looking to purchase competition spec equipment. Fusion do offer products into a higher quality bracket. The Fusion PowerPlant range for example pushes toward the middle product range.

Knowing where Fusion sits in comparison with other products is important to determine value for money and what the product offers in addition over other products. Generally speaking Fusions main competitors are Vibe, Fli and a few others.

When you buy Fusion you get a product with a strong identity, strong design and offers quality at least level with its main competitors. People who are interested in car audio instantly recognise fusion and can relate to its performance.

You can purchase Car audio equipment cheaper than fusion, however I wouldn't recommend it. In my opinion Fusion audio offers the best value for money of all the entry level equipment available on the market as they combine style & performance with a good price tag. If you do decide to go with fusion car audio your onto a winner.

There are a lot of different types of transmitters available to purchase, each differs in performance and quality. As with everything else in life you get the good and the bad. The problem with transmitters is that the bad are very bad and give the other products a poor reputation on the back of theirs.

FM Transmitters by nature are designed with a slight fault, in that they are prone to interference from other signal frequencies. This can manifest in two ways either the transmitter signal is blocked because the other signal is stronger or interference is received over either audio playback, resulting in echo, buzz or both.

The actual quality of the audio being played through the transmitter is generally quite good. Most genuine products such as Griffin iPod fm transmitters , dexim and or logic3 offer audio equivalent to a good radio station (radio 1 for example) however its generally expected if you use a frequency close to a powerful local or national station you will receive a little interference at some point during connection.

The solution to this problem however is simple. Firstly select a signal which is clear of any radio stations, this will reduce the amount of interference heard, secondly if your frequency picks up any in the future simple change frequency. The Griffin iTrip Fm Transmitter for example has 3 pre-set frequency's to change to if you do happen to receive quality issues with the current settings.

FM Transmitters are a good solution if you only want a simple iPod input in your car, If for example you don't need an integrated kit that offers full digital quality, iPod control and text display the Transmitter could be the kit for you.

A small saying that my granddad used to say to me “you get what you pay for” generally rings true in all walks of life. The problem with the question is that it is very general, Which FM Transmitters are we talking about and what indicates “good value”. You can get an fm transmitter from £10 to £20 ranging to £60+, Obviously this has an effect on the quality of the product and subsequently the value for money.

How do we define good value for money?

Personally I would define “value” as representing a similar or better standard than you are currently experiencing. Whether that be Radio 1 Broadcast in the UK, Digital Radio in the US or another quality broadcast signal.

With that in mind, which FM transmitters are best value for money and does that represent value for money in general?

Based on quality there several types of iPod FM Transmitters, Griffin have several available which offer good quality one of which is the Griffin iTrip FM, Dexim again offer's a consistent performance and logic3 offer good performance for the cheaper end of the market. It Is important to remember that you are likely to experience a poorer performance if you live or use the transmitter in an area of high Signal broadcasts E.g Larger cities like London.

After recent news that Dension are due to release a new product entitled the
"Gateway Five" we received our sample models and set about to get
testing just how good it is. Dension promised the item to have a much
better integration than a Parrot MKi 9200 (Parrots Flagship Bluetooth
and iPod car integration kit) and after working with Dension for a few
years - we believe them!

The main big advantage that the Dension
Gateway Five will have over the Parrot alternative is that the Dension
integrates into the stereo's display and controls (either from the
stereo itself, or from the steering controls). This in itself gives it
a better selling point compared to the Parrot but pair this with the
way that the Dension Gateway Five actually takes control of the iPod
and the Phone in comparison to the Parrot MKi 9200 and you really do
have something special. Could this be the product that knocks Parrot
from its perch?

is so exciting. We will now talk about our findings and go further in
depth for each feature listed above.

1. Full CD Quality Audio
Bluetooth
as a technology doesnt provide enough bandwidth for the music to be
sent to the stereo in perfect audio. Pair this with the fact that the
Parrot DOESN'T use the car stereos amplifier (it uses a pretty poor 15
watt internal amplifier) AND the fact that you can only get sound
through your front speakers (unless your lucky enough to be in the 2%
of people who have a vehicle which can handle a better wiring harness,
all be it for another £80!) mean that the Dension simply wipes the
floor with the Parrot kit here. The Dension kit fully hard-wires into
the car stereo via the CAN-Bus system so the entire connection is
optical digital, quality is just perfection. The only time you will
hear bad quality with the Gateway Five is if the MP3 file on the iPod
is poor quality.

2. Hard Wired Digital Connection
We
have touched on this a little above so there isn't too much need to go
into detail but because the Parrot MKi-9200 transmits the iPods music
via Bluetooth, the quality isn't the best. Compare this with the
Dension's CAN-Bus connection and Dension take the spoils again!

3. Works through ALL speakers
Another
simple response needed. The Dension works through every speaker and
utilises the cars amplification (be it from within the stereo itself or
from any upgrade like a Bose system). Because the Parrot MKI kits use
older SOT lead technology, only the front two speakers work.

4. Control Bluetooth from the stereo (Including Missed Calls, Received Calls & Phonebook)
Obviously
the Parrot comes with an external display which can control the phone
functions. Its not a terrible display but its nowhere near as good as
using the vehicles display. It looks out of place in most vehicles and
just doesnt look "OEM". However, you can search by missed calls and
received calls etc. The Dension does exactly the same thing but through
the cars display and cars controls (steering wheel controls and stereo
controls) instead of fiddling with a little external screen.

5. Control the iPod from the Stereo
Now
this is obviously where Dension excell, they have been at the forefront
of iPod integration since the iPod was first made. Anyone who wishes to
integrate iPod in a car always use Dension systems as the standard but
they can never achieve what Dension have achieved because everytime
anyone gets close, Dension raise the bar. The Dension Gateway Five can
control the iPod fully from the stereo, this includes searching for
artists, albums, track, playlists, podcasts, genres - all using the
stereo controls and the steering wheel controls (control can also be
reverted back to the iPod if needed anyway). The Parrots iPod interface
is pretty simple but not impossible to use. Obviously the control has
to be done from the external display again.

Some
like external displays, others think there are numberous issues with
using an external display. One of the main concerns is that theifs know
that there is an aftermarket Bluetooth kit fitted into the vehicle -
making it a target. Other issues are that the displays look fairly ugly
(the ones which dont look too bad tend to be too small to use
accurately). Instead of using an external display, the Dension Gateway
Five uses the vehicles display to tell you everything you need to know.

I was OVERWHELMED! It was a Dension iPod Car kit, really cool. Well, that was the very first one. So, you can understand that I was quite in love with it. To be honest, I was not going to get it. Once you've decided to purchase an iPod car kit, inevitably you've chosen the Gateway Lite produced by Dension. You only have one further obstacle to hurdle, the installation. There are two options available to you for installing the kit. The first option, Pay a professional engineer to install the kit, either travelling to them or they can travel to you. The second option, is to install the iPod car kit yourself. Which is by far the more cost effective option and probably most convenient too. See below an installation guide to judge whether your capable of the installation, should you choose to go ahead.

The installation of the Gateway lite is fairly simple and pain free. Although this is a generic installation guide, it will suit 99% of vehicles.

Before you begin the installation, please remove the keys from the ignition and check that any radio codes are recorded for future reference.

Step one is to remove your car stereo, this will usually involve radio removal tools which will vary depending on what vehicle you have. Radio removal keys are readily available and the majority of online shops or traditional vehicle based retail outlets stock them. Radio removal tools are extremely convenient and can save you a lot of time and energy. This should take between 1-5 minutes

Step two is to remove the harnesses from the back of the stereo, Most vehicles have a Quadlock connection, this is a fairly large connection block that houses the wires to and from the stereo. If the Harness is a Quadlock connection the Dension harness will usually replicate the original harness exactly. The Dension Lite harness simply fits into the vehicle harness and then back to the stereo, basically a link between the vehicle and the stereo.

If the vehicle doesn't have a Quadlock connection, the gateway lite harness fits into the CD changer port on the the back of the stereo. Usually located in the top right of the stereo as your looking at the back of it. Most of the time the harness simply connects straight into place, however occasionally the harness may have to be connected into the original harness then re-connected. This stage should take 2 minutes.

Step three is to connect the Gateway Lite PCB (the little black box) to the dension harness, its the most straight forward step of the installation. This will take 30 seconds.

Step Four is to connect the iPod dock and USB extension cable to the PCB, again very straight forward. Once this stage is done its usually a good idea to turn ignition on to check the system works. (Follow the user manual to perform the operations for iPod/USB track selection) Again this will take 1-2 minutes.

Step five, Route the cables through into position within the vehicle, this is usually the most time consuming part of the installation. Depending on the vehicle this can be a complex job and may require the removal of some of the fascia / Dashboard. This part of the installation may take up to 30 minutes depending on difficulty, especially if you want a professionally installed look.

Step Six, replace the stereo into its fittings. Read the operational instructions from Dension and enjoy the use of your iPod and all of your music while your driving.

The Gateway Lite is the latest in a long line of Dension iPod Car Adapters. With each predecessor showing an increase in usability and functionality. Dension Gateway Lites predecessor the Gateway 100 was the most successful iPod kit in history. Offering a more advance track browsing system than any other kit on the market. However the complex nature of the 100 was ultimately its own downfall.

The 100 iPod kit offered track selection from the steering wheel controls / Stereo or the iPod, in which either artist, album or playlist could be selected. However the complexity of the gateway 100 system was not well suited to the majority of vehicles stereos, which cannot provide text support. This meant users would have to remember which combination of functions would enable iPod or stereo mode, and allow selections of tracks depending on browsing type, something that frustrated a lot of users.

The problem isn't necessarily with the Dension unit, as the system works perfectly with text compatible radios. The problems occur when no text is available, and unfortunately most factory radios are not capable of displaying text rendering the gateway 100 kits difficult to use.

Dension have realised this problem and have improved the browsing system used in the new Gateway Lite. Dension designed the Gateway Lite specifically for none text compatible radios, and by doing so improved the browsing functionality by simplifying the track selection process.

Rather than the complex deep structured system in the Gateway 100, the lite is controlled via the iPod click wheel to browse through the iPod folders. Once the source is selected, tracks can be flicked through using the steering wheel controls for ease of use.

However the improved browsing functionality isn't the only addition to the gateway lite, Dension have added a USB input into the system as standard. In short Dension have yet again improved upon previous kits. The method of navigation for the USB is different as there is no click wheel to operate from. However the operations are still simple. Dension has released the latest Gateway CAN kits for Volkswagen vehicles. The New 100/300 kits released provide text information on certain radios in newer VW’s. The Gateway system offers the same excellent sound quality and the ability to control your music through the iPod, stereo or steering wheel controls as well as charging the iPod. However the CAN system allows text to be played across the Cluster screen on the information panel. A lot of aftermarket products are produced and designed to connect via a ISO harness, certainly the majority of Bluetooth car kits are provided with ISO connections as standard. These kits are designed by their manufacturers specifically because ISO is a standard connection used in a lot of older (and some more recent) vehicles. This system is used for several reasons, but mainly for reducing costs & to keep the products standard without too many SKU's (Stock Keeping Units) e.g. to remove the need for one kit for each type of vehicle or radio per manufacturer. You can see these will soon add up to a lot of different versions of the same products (SKU's).

ISO is a universal system that was used by a lot of vehicle manufacturers up to several years ago. The ISO connection is made up of a group of wires, which all have a standard and specific position within the harness. Each wire within the harness represents a specific connection to a device within the vehicle. For example the front right, back right, front left and back left speakers always hold the same position within the ISO harness no matter which vehicle it is located in. This allows the manufacturers of the products to produce a kit that operates in exactly the same way no matter what the device is connected too. By using ISO harness's you negate the need to piggy back and/or solder connections when fitting the product.

However more and more manufacturers are starting to use their own wiring systems within their vehicles, this creates a small problem when installing the kits as connections will have to be made manually if the harness is different. So connecting specific speaker wires to the correct equivalent within the harness (each case will be different for the majority of vehicles) there is an easy alternative to this problem, the ISO2CAR adapter.

ISO2CAR wiring harnesses are made specifically to avoid this problem. There are around 20 to 30 different types of harness' available covering the vast majority of vehicles. The ISO2CAR harness is a connection device that will connect into the products ISO harness, then into the vehicle harness making the installation much more simple and pain free. The Contour Designs surface sounds compact bluetooth car kit

Contour Designs released the Surface sounds compact kit into the bluetooth market with the hope mastering the art of bluetooth integration, and to be fair they have done quite a good job.

Its slim body attaches to your vehicles sun visor using its large durable clip. It features a "wand" that flips down with an inbuilt mic, that also doubles as the devices power switch. Pulling down the wand turns the unit on. It then actively seeks out paired devices within its 10 metre range. Once a device is found, the kit automatically connects to it.

The kit comprises of 4 Buttons, Call, End Call, Volume Up, Volume Down. You will only ever need to touch one button to make, receive, end or refuse calls. Its simple, safe and effective, basically does what it says on the tin.

Contour built the kit with two things in mind, integrating ease of use with stylish looks and achieving a consistency that very few other kits have met. Combining these is a rare achievement that not many other manufacturers have achieved, but have contour managed to?

There are a lot of different types of bluetooth handsfree kits available on the market, many different brands, styles and designs offering different functions. However each kit performs what is essentially the same task, offering Handsfree call functionality while driving. Although there are many types of kit they all fall into two categories, Universal Sun Visor Kits or Fully Integrated Kits.

Universal Sun Visor Kits also referred to as Plug and Play kits are a portable speaker and microphone combination packaged into one working unit. They hold a small but strong storage battery that allow for long standby life so you can attach the kit to your sun visor and leave it dormant until you need it.
